JC CHARGES TO FINISH 14TH IN TIRERACK.COM 300
April 8, 2002 - Baltimore, MD

JC Beattie Jr and ATI Performance Racing made the long trip out to Irwindale, California after a week of uncertainty due to problems with the racecar hauler. The frustrating week ended on a positive note after the ATI #09 ran well all weekend and came home 14th in the TireRack.com 300.

The racing weekend started on Saturday with three practice sessions and one qualification session. Beattie was pleased with the ATI Performance Products #09 as it was very fast early in practice.

The crew only made a few shock changes and one spring change throughout the day Saturday. When JC went out for his qualifying run the temperature had dropped 10 - 15° which proved to be detrimental to the handling of the #09. JC’s qualifying time of 18.67 mirrored the slowest lap time he turned all day in practice.

Beattie started 23rd in the TireRack.com 300 and managed to keep the car out of trouble while battling in the middle of the pack early in the race. The race was going as planned until the first pit stop when there was a miscommunication among the crew and the car did not get any fuel.

“The situation on pit road was unfortunate but I knew I had a good car so I couldn’t let it ruin our day,” commented Beattie. “We had a guest drag racer as our fuel man and he didn’t realize what was happening.”

JC made it back out on the track after losing some crucial laps and gradually worked his way through the field up to the 15th spot. The car worked well on the bottom of the track and JC kept it there all day as he charged to the front.

The ATI #09 finished 14th after Mike Cope was disqualified by ASA officials for failure to pass post-race inspection following the TireRack.com 300. Joey Clanton dominated the race and took home his second straight victory in 2002.

The next stop for the American Speed Association is Big Daddy’s South Boston Speedway on Saturday night April 13, 2002 at 8:00 PM. TNN will be showing the race on tape-delay at 12:00 AM Sunday morning. Check out www.jcbeattie.com and www.asaracing.com for the latest on JC Beattie and ATI Performance Racing.
