RECORD NUMBER OF CAUTIONS AT TOLEDO
July 2, 2001 - Toledo, OH
The ATI Performance Racing Team was seeing yellow yesterday in Toledo.
Race ten of the ASA AC Delco Series found the ATI #09 Chevrolet Monte
Carlo competing at Toledo Speedway's half-mile oval. The race saw a Toledo
Speedway record-tying 16 cautions for 95 laps, nearly one third of the
Glass City 300.
J.C. Beattie, Jr. and the ATI Performance Racing Team had hopes of a top-ten
finish after a strong sixth-place showing in the qualifying race. But
a multi-car accident on lap two was an early indication of how cautions
would dictate the race.
The #09 Chevy Monte Carlo suffered damage in the early incident and then
had to play "catch up" the rest of the day."It was a real
shame that we were part of that wreck at the start," said Beattie,
Jr. "I knew that the ATI Performance Products Chevrolet Monte Carlo
was going to be really strong today. It's just a shame that we started
the race off in that wreck."
The ATI Performance Racing Team worked hard to get Beattie, Jr. back into
the action and with just over 50 laps to go, the #09 car had worked its
way up through the field and was running in 12th position. Then on lap
249 the #52 car of ASA veteran and current point leader Butch Miller made
contact with Beattie's ATI Chevy Monte Carlo. Beattie, Jr. finished in
16th place, one lap behind race winner Johnny Sauter. Only thirteen cars
finished on the lead lap, with six lead changes among five drivers.
The next stop in the ASA AC Delco Series is the Chicago Motor Speedway
in Cicero, Illinois, July 8. The race will be televised live on TNN at
2 PM.Fans in the Baltimore area can listen for J.C. Beattie, Jr. on The
Checkered Flag, a radio program covering NASCAR, CART, IRL, and Maryland
