BEATTIE BITTEN BY BERLIN
WALL June 6, 2002 - Baltimore, MD Berlin
Raceway was the next stop on the ASA Tour for ATI Performance Racing. The
ATI Chevy Monte Carlo has had a good history at Berlin including a strong
run in 2001 coming home in 15th place. The ATI Team was focused and excited
to be back in action for the Tires.com 300 presented by BFGoodrich. The ATI Performance Racing Team knew what it took to be good at Berlin and was ready to make a solid run to the front. JC had a little work to do starting mid-pack but he was up to the challenge. Early on in the race Beattie had the ATI #09 working real well as he quickly moved up several positions. "The car felt really good and it was working well in traffic," said Beattie over the team radio. Trouble struck on Lap 66 when the #09's power steering line broke causing it to spin and make contact with the outside retaining wall in turn 4. The rear-end took on some heavy damage but JC kept the car running and brought it into the pits for repair. The crew got JC back out on the track and he completed the race running but could not make up all the time that was lost in the pits. "We haven't gotten any brakes in the last two races," stated crew chief Alan Massengill, "We just have to keep battling and working hard week in and week out." Three-time former ASA champion, Butch Miller, made his 2002 ASA debut in fine fashion as he started on the pole and held on to win the Tires.com 300 presented by BFGoodrich. Gary St. Amant finished second with Mike Garvey, Dave Sensiba and Todd Kleuver rounding out the top five. The next stop on the ASA Tour is Wisconsin International Raceway, Sunday June 9, 2002 at 2:00 PM EST. The race will be telecast live on TNN.
