BEATTIE BLAZES THROUGH
CEDAR RAPIDS May 21, 2002 - Baltimore, MD The
ATI Performance Racing Team and J.C.Beattie were happy to return to Cedar
Rapids, Iowa for the O'Reilly Auto Parts 300 on Sunday. Thousands of race
fans flocked to Hawkeye Downs Speedway for a weekend of ASA short track,
stock car action. J.C. was on hand signing autographs for the crowd and
took time to introduce the all-new ATI paint scheme. Fans gathered round
to get a close up look at the race car adorned with sponsors decals from
Auto Meter, Valvoline, and uniform supplier rus.J.C. would start the O'Reilly Auto Parts 300 from the 24th spot in the field. After a brilliant start, J.C. was making his way through the pack. Crew Chief, Alan Massengill, was pleased with the race set-up and informed J.C. that if he maintained his pace, he was looking good for a top 10 finish. Unfortunately, the race ended early for J.C. when an oil pressure hose caught fire and filled the cockpit with smoke! "I saw smoke and the team told me to pull into the pits" recalled Beattie during an interview with TNN, "But when I saw the flames coming from the hood, I pulled off the track and got out as fast as I could." Fortunately, all the cars are equipped with emergency fire extinguishing devises and J.C. was wearing a fire resistant Stand 21 drivers' suit to minimize the risk of serious injury. "We'll regroup during this off week and come back strong at Berlin on June 1st," remarked crew chief Alan Massengill, "There was only minor damage to the car, but we're all glad that J.C. is fine" ASA veteran Mike Eddy returned to Hawkeye Downs Speedway only to be bumped by Joey Clanton with 15 laps to go and passed for the lead. Clanton again celebrated in victory lane after winning his fifth straight. Next on the ASA Tour is Berlin Raceway, Saturday June 1, 2002. The race will be shown on TNN on a tape-delay basis.
